Where the chalk cliffs begin
It is at Ault that the long wall of white chalk begins, running on towards Normandy’s Alabaster Coast. Facing the Channel, these cliffs, battered by wind and storms, offer a striking panorama, listed as a Grand Site de France. At sunset, the light sets the chalk and the sea ablaze.
The finest viewpoints
From the sea wall and the clifftop road at Ault, the view drops to the sea and runs along the whole line of cliffs. A little higher, the lighthouse looks out over the village. All these viewpoints are a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
Making the most of it
- Keep to the paths set back from the edge: the cliff erodes and rockfalls can happen.
- Wear sturdy shoes and bring a windproof jacket, as the weather changes quickly.
- For photography, aim for sunrise or sunset.
