The Bois de Cise

A green hollow in the cliffs

South of Ault, the Bois de Cise is a wooded valleuse tucked into a fold in the cliffs, a rare thing on this coastline. Beneath the beeches and oaks the atmosphere is peaceful, almost secret, and made for daydreaming.

Belle Époque villas and woodland lanes

During the Belle Époque the wood filled with handsome Anglo-Norman villas, which you come across along lanes with poetic names. Do not miss the modest chapel of Sainte-Edith, hidden among the trees.

Down to the sea

A flight of steps leads down to a sheltered little beach, revealed at low tide at the foot of the chalk. The Bois de Cise is also a stage on the coastal path between Ault and Mers-les-Bains.
